White love...

The first owner likes his bikes white, so this one was repainted from new (I heard he did the same on his 6th gen)

Trust me... if Honda had thought to sell the VFR800X in the US, I would have considered it! I don't know what it costs to bring a specific model of bike to the US, but it can't be that much in comparison to what it costs to develop the bike in the first place!

Got 1st dibs this white 2000 5th gen with 90,000km on her.

Stood idle/outside under a cover for 2 years. and yes, we do get wet and cold winters...

Connected a fresh battery and she fired right up and set in a steady idle.  But then...

Tank lock jammed, no way to open

Front rotors 3.1mm (3.5mm service limits)

Used for commuting the past 8 years: fork lowers, calipers, pistons and bracked corroded to F...

Stanchions pitted looking like spotted dick

Tacho display not working, nor indicators

RHS exhaust heat shield looking like swiss cheese (the exhaust system in perfect nick though)

Rear spindle seized solid

Chain and sprockets rusted beyond salvation

Bike was painted white  (from red) from new, but scraped a wee bit here and there ( as is to be expected)

Rear caliper, rotor and bracket corroded, in fact anything metal was corroded.

Asking Euro 300, I still walked away.

That's a shame, but it sounds like you'd be tearing that thing down to the frame to make it functional. I probably would have bought it and regretted it! 

Offered the guy that if he washes the thing and send me pictures, I will put it up for sale on the Dutch VFR forum for him.  Pretty sure an existing 5th gen owner with sun-bleached plastics will pounce. The white rims are dent/scratch free I think... Unsure what the insie of the tank will look like. But firing up right away (and run for more that 5 minutes w/o a stutter) bodes well.

Decent parts bike though. Be a reasonable project too for 300 euro.

Now you have me hoping the suspension is not White Power (WP)........    :goofy:

PS: WP is now Austrian KTM owned but was founded in the Netherlands. The springs were white, not because white is better; simply because they could have them coated economically.... Via a company that made hospital beds...  :tongue:

And white is the cheapest paint.

I really should ship that bike over here.  I miss her badly.  Not having her around makes me do crazy things like plan to put V8s in vans.

Just as soon as I figure out where "here" will be... (Muscat, Amsterdam and Zurich have all been possibilities this year.)

Rear wheel finished and installed.. Subframe got a new coat of black.

Routed the wirring loom throughout the tail and installed all the electrics..

One question, does the wiring loom on the handlebar controls pass in front or go behind the front fork leg ???

The trick with the lcd swap withen the cluster did the trick. Allthough the donor bikes cluster was trashed, the lcd was still in good condition. Swapped the LCD's out en presto, the mileage went down from 106,000 kilometers to 29,000 kilometers. I never owned a bike with that a low odo reading.

The exhaust headers and gave them a new coating, worked on misc. bits and finished the day with the bike looking like this:

Thanks,RC36B my manual wasn't as clear as your pic.. I did install them behind the legs, so I am assured it is good.. 

Also the bands on the cluster / frame stay wiring make sense now.. They are welded upward, like (to me) Honda installed them wrong way around..  You have to fold them down against it's welding position to hold the wiring.. Weird..

The reason why I got puzzled, was that the 2000 onward model has a different top mount and handlebars. The locking bolts are in a different position. The handlebars between the pre 2000 model without HISS and the 2000 onward models with HISS are different, and not exchangeable.

She got the manual back again.. The throttle housing on the 2000 model looked like a nightmare to revive. Everything is corroded. Also it requires the coolant recirculation, so different waterpipes and thermostat housing..

For know I installed the throttle housiing of the donor bike. So the cable is back.. I saved all the parts to install that back in the near future, but for now it is working..

IIRC the cable isn't realy a choke, it is a fast idle function..

Yeah... the ECU is kind of primitive - the "choke" lever or the later vax-unit is ridiculous. Should have been a servo controlled by the ECU. The ECU already have sensors (coolant temp, crank sensor, MAP etc) to decide on idle. I never understood why Honda chose a solution which didn't use components already there.

That bad looking came from whitey.. The good looking engine came with the donor..

Don't get me wrong.. My 1000R mill looked worse, and in fact was seized after two years neglecting/non running.. But it came out nice after a full resto..

Full engine resto means another 200 hrs.. The donor saved me a lot of time..

Yes. There is enough clearance to keep the exhaust in place.
