Lost My &*%$^#@ Key

I know I am STUPID, but I have misplaced (lost) my key. I do not have a replacement key or the key code.
What is the best and cheapest way obtain a new key.

I would explain how I lost it but that's a topic for another forum.

I BELIEVE Honda can look it up from your registration number (VIN).

Thanks for the help. I have heard that the key code is on the ignition lock. You have to take ignition lock off to read the code.

Supposedly a Dealer can give you a Key Code from the Vin. that a Locksmith can use to cut a new key.

After consulting with 3 dealers, I have been told they can't run the VIN to make a key. I was told I had to remove the ignition from the triple tree to get the code off of the ignition, this will require removing the whole front end.

Is there any truth to this?

Not really!
Yes there is usually a code on the bottom of the ign. switch that can't be read on the bike. :dry:

It will be a PIA and require special torx socket(hole in center) can't remember the size, but if you have a 1/4" drive set w/several different extensions you could sneak it out w/o removing anything, but with a good deal of effort.

Did you happen to buy it new or from a Dealer used, they should have the key code on file. Or can you contact the seller to ask them if they happen to have a spare key or the code around still. :biggrin:

Yeah, if there decent they have the file of your purchase that may include the key code and there might be a way for them to get it for you. The others didn't sell you the bike and may not care to make the extra effort. :biggrin:

Defiantly worth a try.

Like i say, you can get the ign. out with a lot of effort.

I thought I might try to help you find the old one while you're waitting.

Do you have a usual place to put it? Is it in a pocket of something you were wearing and have changed out of? Was there something that got you off track the last time you came in from riding that could have made you lie the key down out of it's normal place? Could it have been dropped near the bike, or near where you usually put it?

When this happens to me I find it in the seat lock :biggrin: I also keep a spare wired behind the fairing.

I thought I might try to help you find the old one while you're waitting.

Do you have a usual place to put it? Is it in a pocket of something you were wearing and have changed out of? Was there something that got you off track the last time you came in from riding that could have made you lie the key down out of it's normal place? Could it have been dropped near the bike, or near where you usually put it?

Let me pick up on Monk's idea here and ask you this: do you have a toddler at home? If you do .... well..... you might as well just take a shot at taking the ignition out... :biggrin:

O. K. guys I have to LMFAO, now that I have had about 1/2 a case of Smithwick's at the local Irish Pub and my wife laughed at your comments, she said did you tell them YOU ARE THE LOSER OF SH%T, to which my reply was no.

(secretly hiding the fact I would lose my ass if it wasn't attached)

I must admit, I am in the middle of a move and the spare key could be hiding in the land of the lost (storage unit) and i can't bear to look for it.

Get the right sized torx bit and a few extensions and you can remove the ignition, I've had to do this on my 5th gen too. Honda used to put the key code on the gas cap and seat lock, I don't know if they were still doing this with the later VFR's? I've got a spare seat lock in the garage I can take a look at...but you can't get your seat lock off w/out taking the seat and tail off, which requires the key! :biggrin:

So getting the ignition out is the best bet. Or ask the bartender there if anyone has turned in a lost key? :dry:

You know you'll find the key in a pants or jacket pocket after you get the new ones made.

But you won't find them until next spring when you wear that same outfit again and find them in the inside pocket where you would not lose them. :fing02:

:nod: I actually "lost" the key to my FMX in that little pocket inside the front right jean pocket.

I've had a new key made from the ignition switch before and Kevin (Baileyrock) is correct it's a PIA. The code is on the bottom of the ignition switch in small text. You'll have to remove the switch and take it to a good locksmith. The locksmith will look the code up from Honda a make a key. It's a pain but it does work. The bolts are torx type and difficult to remove.

This would be the very last resort but one I had to do because I had a faulty ignition switch - you had to do a lot of keg jiggling to get the switch to turn. I finally got to the point I was afraid I would be out in the middle of nowhere and not be able to get the ignition to turn (it was a used bike).

Buy a new lock set from Honda. I think mine ran me about $165 from Ron Ayers. It comes with an ignition switch, a new gas tank cap/lock, and a new seat lock (oh, and two new keys).

Get a half a dozen key blanks from Honda and have half a dozen extra keys made up.

Wow! I thought I was alone in that, too! I'm not the only one!

One thing I've done is to take one key and get rid of the black plastic on it, so it won't be bulkey.... and keep that in my wallet as a spare(same with my Jeep).........

I do this too. All my vehicles have a key tied to it somewhere. Now all I have to do is remember where...

New cars are getting to be a PIA. Computer chip in them makes spares VERY expensive.

Oh those were the days when keys were just cut metal and not $200 electronic pieces...

I have carried spare keys in my wallet for years, but now the keys are just way too thick on my cars and truck and ya can't cut the head off.

Having just removed my ignition lock, I can tell you that you'll be lucky if you can remove yours w/o taking the front end off. The bolts are extremely tight and set in locktite, which is a biatch to break. I had trouble turning them with the front off and using 1/2 drive wrench.

Been there.... done that.

I always carry a spare ignition, disc lock, and GIVI bag key in my riding jacket.
B-u-u-t-t-t ... went for a quick errand/ride one night and forgot to shift the spare key set from vented riding jacket to winter jacket.

Had just filled up with gas, clicked the gas cap back down, went to insert into the ignition ... and *woops!* .... "tinkly-tinkly-tonkly-tonk."

And my key was GONE. *Somewhere* under the gas tank/fairing/dark places.
And I could not find it. Even tried rolling the bikes over bumps trying to shake it loose.
And the tool kit is under, you guessed it, lock and key.
And I had just said goodbye to the wifey-poo on the cell phone as she left for a friend's house.
And all I could do was leave a message for the WP on the home phone that she would hopefully get when she got back home.

A-n-d, then I had a nice sit on the curb at the gas station with about ... oh.... two hours to ponder the mysteries of life.

Can someone elaborate on where to find the code on the seat lock? I've lost my key to my '97. The seat is off - ty broken seat latch - and I can't find it on there anywhere ????

There is no code on the seat lock. It's on the ignition switch and can only be read if the switch is removed.

Since this thread got resurrected, I lost my keys twice. Once while parked on my Katana in Manhattan on a Sunday night. A call to mobile locksmith in Manhattan on a Sunday night will set you back about $400 clams. Don't lose your keys in Manhattan on a Sunday night, kids.

Second time it was my car key, which my son flushed down the toilet. It was a fancy key with alarm and stuff. It got stuck and clogged the toilet, so I had to remove the bowl and get it out from the other side. Then I paid $500 for the new insides and reprogram.
Yeah. I'm lucky that way.

Wow thats bad . I had a mobile locksmith pick my fuel door about 2 months ago. Somehow he got a code off of it and was able cut a key on the spot for 150 bucks.
