Clear Clutch Window

As you may know, we here on VFRd have our very own tame Rocket Surgeon on staff.

We keep him in a specially prepared titanium cage, as it would not be fair to all the MotoGp teams if we just let him roam around and make stuff out of metal all the time.

Some say, he can weld an engine block back together using only an old soup tin, and the intense stare from his eyes.

All we know is, he's called SebSpeed!



Back in February of last year, this thread popped to the surface of the most recent posts list:

I was intrigued, and followed the thread with great interest. And then he said this:

So some messaging occurred, followed by a trip to the post office, then some waiting, then work and life happened, and Sebastian is waiting impatiently, pacing back and forth in his titanium cage for me to get off my duff and install the damn thing.   :bliss:

Only I thought it would be a good time to have a look at my clutch, as it hasn't been checked since the day it rolled off the assembly line back in 1999, when Prince was singing that catchy song of his.   :media:

So some Ebaying occurred, and a couple more trips to the post office, followed by more waiting. By this time, Sebastian is gnawing at the bars of his cage.   :3:

Fast forward a few more weeks, and I slipped this photo under the door of his cage. I about thought I was gonna lose my hand:

More work and life happened (hey, a guy's gotta eat, unlike Seb who gets his daily rations of sauteed camshafts and roasted crank bearings prepared and stuffed through the chute of his cage by poorly paid illegal immigrants because no-one else will do the job).


Then I tried to disguise our skullduggery by throwing it out nonchalantely in this thread, to see how many of the class were paying attention:

Apparently, only the Canadians and Yrpeens are actually literate, because KKen and some Rossi? (Rosso) guy from that Yrpeen country that's a always sinking into the sea actually said anything. I thought they'd be busy shovelling snow and checking out all the leaky dykes dikes, but I guess not.


SO, seeing as being obtuse worked about as well for me as pruning the old member list did, I will just throw it out into the blazing sun for all to see, and maybe even let Seb out of his cage for a few minutes to have a look. But I'm not responsible if he pees on your tires, let's get that straight right now.   :owned:

I'm not amazed with sebs work because it is always quality, the TLR guys also did that modification as friend has one on his TLR, I also like the heat paint crinkle finish   :fing02:

Veefer800Canuck how do you keep your bike so clean, I have spent weeks just trying to get grit from parts of motor while I'm waiting parts & compared to yours mine is ghetto.

How do I keep the bike so clean?

Well, the rebuild two winters ago sure helped. At one point, the complete engine, with rads, was sitting all alone on the centerstand with the exhaust system propped up by a few blocks of wood, and the intake attached to the top of the engine, plus the entire wiring harness draped over it. And that was it. Nothing else there. Nothing.

As everything went on, it got cleaned or painted or powdercoated beforehand. Since then, it's just been regular washings.


And as I was screwing the cheesy plastic oil filler cap on, I was wishing for a nice billet aluminum one. The last one I bought from EBAY claiming to fit "most hondas" actually doesn't fit a VFR. It was too small, so I sold it again.

SO, I did some digging and found that it's an M24x3 thread, and a BMW F650 uses the same thread for it's filler cap, so I took a chance and ordered one.

There are some on EBAY for the RC45, but they are a hex head, and I wanted a "normal" top, like the stocker. So here is is:

Oh, and the wrinkle black paint came from a can, usually used for engine valvecovers and the like:

I was originally going to remove the oil sight window and have the cover powdercoated, but Seb had applied a special aircraft sealant to the backside of the cover, just to be 110% sure the weld would not leak, which it probably wouldn't, but anyhow.......better safe than, well you know.

The upshot was that the sealant can't take the 400'F necessary for powdercoat, so I masked and prepped the cover for the paint, and proceeded as per the destructions on the can.

Just wanted to add, 2500 km to BC and back last weekend, NO oil leaks from the cover anywhere. Paint was still smelling a bit on the way there at each stop, despite baking it in the oven for an hour at 200'F before installation (without the lexan window and ring installed) but by the time I got home, the smell was almost gone.

Two thumbs up!

And yes, Auspanol, the bike got very dirty. Bug city. Washed it when I got to Nelson, and when I got back home again. So it does leave the garage once and awhile! I am at nearly 80,000 km now and my rear tire is down to the wear indicator bars.

The Nelson attendees were drawn to the clear clutch window like moths to a flame - as we jostled for position and banged heads leaning over to get a closer look at such an unusual piece of mechanical artistry. I doubt every attendee looked at every bike, but I'll guarantee everyone saw this one. This mod stands out in a class of its own. Nicely done! :fing02:

Comes with an O-ring, so you don't have to re-use your old one. It wasn't identical to the pic in the ebay auction, but that's fine. I really didn't want it drilled for safety wire anyhow.

So for the 5th gen, 6th gen, and RC45, a BMW F650 oil filler cap WILL work. Part number quoted above is legit!

I'd stick a googley faced picture of the "Doctor'" in there and people can watch him spin. but then you have to buy the matching helmet, of course. You can have him sign the window if you can show it to him at the next Laguna Seca Moto GP.

I think he's inferring that since I can now "see" how dirty the oil is, I will be changing it more often?

Anyhow, except for road trips stateside, I rarely put on enough km per year to warrant changing the oil more frequently than annually, and that probably won't change.

And I use mobil 1 which I find to be darker from the jug when new, whereas other oils are more golden tan.

I never use colour as an indicator anyway, just time and mileage.

The original clutch cover was clean as a whistle inside when I removed it to put this one on, so I doubt I'll be building up any sludge. Mobil 1 15w50 car oil. Non-energy conserving.

They are cad plated from the factory which looks fine by me. I have heard of bolts snapping In use after chroming because of hydrogen embrittlement. It can be done, but the metallurgy of the bolt before chroming has to be known, and the process controlled to avoid hydrogen embrittlement. In other words, not this cat. Gold cad plating is fine!!!

Well, in the video you can see a sheen of oil drops on the inside, I was thinking that could get worse with time (like folks said).

But yeah, if you can just just pop off the ring that will do it.

Yes, Pro-Bolt P/N LOFCB10S which is for a BMW F650. It comes in several other colours also.

The "S" suffix is the colour, in my case, silver.

Been thinking along the same lines for my 4th gen along with the SC44 slipper clutch am hoping to install around xmas this year.

Am thinking of removing the face leaving a usable edge of clutch engine cover and replace with glass or what my local Alu. welder suggests.

What material did Seb use for the glass?

Was hoping to use composite materials/Araldite or what i find will work to stick the glass on and a yet undecided trim cover to give a clean finish to the outer ring surface. The clutch cover is not under lot of oil pressure so i don't see the need to weld any metal parts or use bolts? But i might be over simplifying things... will see...

It is proven space age technology after all....

Was fortunate enough to be able to look over a Russian space ship last month which seals well in space using resin and fiber matting in the mix....

Russian earth landing module.. Simple computers being updated among other update work done here on isle of man. Hopeful relaunch after refit...

Or i guess if Seb is thinking of selling a few i could well save myself a little work and buy a 4th gen version ready to roll??

Also had the oil cover from pro bolt as mentioned on thread in UK but for my 4th gen. Was no problem.. Honda fitment.. Have lock wired it on as it was a little loose fitting....

The window is made of lexan. No leaks in about 2500km of riding thus far.

As for 4th gen availability? Well you'd have to PM Seb and see what he says I guess.

I designed the rings especially for the 4th gen cover. By chance, they fit a variety of other covers as well.

Nice installation Rob, as always, and good find on the oil filler cap - I had the same problem, the one I ordered didn't fit, so I'll get one of these ones now. And it kind of matches my silver Traxxion Dynamics preload adjusters too :fing02:

It continues to park, but every now and then it gets some attention... actually Seb should take some credit there, as its his occasional push (and his engineering talents!) that have been driving the more recent work on the thing.

Right now I can't even get to it as other things fill my workshop and free time, but we'll get there :)

I would love to do it up in that fake magnesium bronze finish that is on the case covers of the 2nd gens, but I doubt I could fins that colour anyway.  I thinl I'll just blast off the paint and clearcoat the ally.

So I stopped by fastenall for stainless harware & found out they only sell it in bulk... Anyway, if any of you are interested in M6 x 1 x 25/30 stainless hex head cap screws for the cover and for the clutch pressureplate bolts let me know...

Hey V8C and Timmy- what is the best way to prep the cover for paint with the oil window still in it? I'm worried about the effect solvents may have on the clear window and window seal.

This is such an amazing mod it would look killer on a streetfighter IMO. It's probably not in my budget at the moment but I would love to get some details on it for future reference

Hey V8C and Timmy- what is the best way to prep the cover for paint with the oil window still in it? I'm worried about the effect solvents may have on the clear window and window seal.

Wouldn't you want to dis-assemble the cover so you don't paint the ring and the bolts??  I would honestly dis-assemble the thing anyway even if you are intending to paint the ring and bolts so you may have a prayer of dis-assembly later without destroying your entire paint job.

:blink: Dude.... The ring is getting sent for powder coat... I'm talking about the little window you look at your oil level through. I don't wanna screw it up prepping the big enchilada for it's finish coat

For paint or powder, the best thing you can do is tape off the sight glass and the seal surfaces, and glass bead or sandblast the surface to be painted. Then thoroughly clean the part and prime/paint.

All I did was clean the cover with varsol (think about it, the oil window is bathed in oil all day, and it's fine with that, and varsol isn't far from oil).

After that, hot soapy water and rInse/let dry. Then paint.

Got mine yesterday!

Started it last night, but it'll be a few more days til the pressure plate is finished at the P/C shop.

No leaks either!!! (the warranty period is up now, so I just jinxed myself)

I had the cover and one of the rings powdercoated a sort of semi gloss black. I've left the other ring original and may change it out sometime for a different look. 

Gives the bike a cool look. One thing I can confirm is the fogging of the glass by the oil until it gets hot, at least right now with temps here around 5-10 degrees C (41-50 F).

Please pm me pricing for a 6th gen. I'm sure I can find a spare cover from eBay. My stock one is scratched on the part that would be removed to fit the window.

1. Is that a real post count for you, or was there some weird server restore back in the day that resulted in a large archive of posts being assigned to you?

2. If genuine, how does one accumulate more than 23,000 posts?

I think of myself as an active member of the board, but at my current post rate of approximately one post per week it would take me [...does some math...] 450 years to rack up that many posts. I don't think I'm going to get there. Or, if I resolved to achieve that milestone sooner, it would take better than six posts every single day for ten straight years without interruption.

Is there a story there?

It's real... let's just say there was a time when I was less distracted by tools and machinery... and a wife... and family... lol Being around the site for 10+ years helps too.

You can buy a VFR clutch cover, or ship yours (but you will have downtime) if he doesn't have one in stock.  Regardless you have to ultimately provide the cover.  He made one for me and shipped today and I'll swap mine (2000) and ship mine back to him shortly after it gets here.

Well I just installed my clutch window on my 2014 VFR , wow, so happy. I was unwilling to take any down time so I spent the $210 to buy a new right side case cover.

I'll probably put it on ebay at some point but I will sell a perfectly good case cover or drop ship it to Seb to save shipping. The cover has maybe 200 miles on it, still perfect, would sell shipped for $150 , also have a pressure plate which you may want to have powder coated at same time for an additional $10 .

please let me know how the white holds up, mine is not liking the heat or oil or both and is yellowing :(

Did you paint or powder coat ?

its powder, prismatic powder. I find it really picky with heat to much or to long and it turns color in the oven, didn't find that out until I was done with the pressure plate, live and learn will redo this winter

Glad you asked... i cleaned and spraypainted mine with high temp bbq paint, i guess i should have looked for chemical resistant or something

I havent ridden since the paint peeled a bit into my oil, going to pull the plate and have it powdercoated - but now I'm curious if you think white pc can work?

Think i should flush the oil for that bit of paint in it?

I'm looking to do mine in white as well.  Hmm, maybe I have to rethink this.  I'm thinking of polishing the powdercoating after I'm finished to give a smooth finish, hoping that helps with oil penetration.  I can always re-do quickly, but don't want to have to re-do every year because of yellowing.  I'm curious if it's just the brand of powdercoating you used?
