My speedometer needle works but flutters and is not smooth all of a sudden.

Appears that there is something wrong or I have contracted Parkinson's disease in my right wrist, any ideas?
#2
Have you changed your chain lately ?

Anyway, I'd check to see if your front sprocket bolt and speedo cap are matched up to fit.
#3
Is it 'looks like a bad connection' flutter, or is it 'looks like my R/r is acting up' flutter?
#4
Since there seems to be other possiblities, You can check my guess with a good  flashlight without having to take anything apart.........There should be a white(if clean) cap over the f/sprocket bolt all the way to the flange.
#5
I got the same. Ok above 70, but looks like a compass below that.

Speedo drive nut.

Undo the sensor labelled "TDK" on the side of the countershaft sprocket (two 8mm bolts) and inspect the nylon speedo drive nut, it's probably pooched.

Ya, go find a man who has family members suffering from Parkinson's, look him in the eye, and ask him.

It may have been not the greatest analogy, but I don't think it was done with malice...lighten up!

+1 on the post with photos...the little white nylon part replacement will fix your problem.

....or the speedo on any triumph made before 1990.

Apologies everyone....its my dry English sense of humor, as 2thdr points out no malice intended.

Thank you all for your kind advise.

I would guess the white nut first followed by the R/R headed south. I noticed my speedo acting funny for a bit before my lights joined the circus that quickly led to my R/R toasting.

On jimmer's topic - Everybody is sensitive about SOMETHING. You can't say "gay" anymore, you can't say "black", you can't say anything w/o somebody getting sensitive. People need to lighten up some. It obviously wasn't a direct jab at a family member/friend/etc. I've got a bald spot bigger than most of your faces but I'll bet I've got better bald jokes than any of you. I also had a recent vertigo issue and I immediately picked up the nick name of "dizzy" at work. Being in the hospital puking the life out of me was no laughing matter but I know my coworkers weren't trying to belittle me. I've been on here for about 6 years and have never seen a real attack on any one group/condition/whatever. I really only remember one instance where somebody was shown the door here. That's what makes this site work so well. If something crosses you the wrong way, just learn to let some things roll of your back. :bliss:

A woman was speeding down the highway late for work and gets pulled over by a cop. He takes her info and asks, whats the hurry? She says im late for work,he asked what do you do? She says im an asshole stretcher! He asked how does that work? She says well I take an asshole and stretch it,and stretch it till it's about 6 feet tall. He asked what do you do with a 6 ft asshole? She says give them a radar gun and badge and put them on the side of the road.   :laughing6-hehe:

Cop pulls a guy over for running a stop sign, he walks up to the car and the driver asked, what did I do? Cop say you ran the stop sign, driver say, but I slowed down and looked both ways..... And this banter goes on for a while..... then the cop says get out of the car and starts hitting the driver with his club......Driver say's, why are you hitting me? Cop say's ..... would you like me to slow down or stop..... :laughing6-hehe:

I consider that nylon nut and/or material to be a design defect.  Mine showed a lot of wear on just the first chain replacement.  I always felt Honda didn't really care to fix known VFR problems.  If people here know, they know.

Excuse me its a while since I posted.

Veefer800Canuck you were correct with the diagnosis of my problem. The inside of the white plastic piece is shot. Speedometer Sensor Assembly - OEM Honda part number 37700-MBG-010.

Costs $89.00.

I contacted Bike Bandit and a local Honda dealership, they both confirmed that the part is not available any where in the USA.

Any suggestions?

An over seas source?

Is there a way to source one from a recking yard?

Cheers Stephenm

Buy just the white part. P/N 44808-MR7-013.  Ron Ayers has them for $5.62

A cop pulls a guy over for speeding over 100mph.  The cop says to the guy "You were speeding like crazy and you refused to stop when I pulled up behind you so what is your excuse?"  "Well", says the guy, "Last weekend my wife ran away with another guy and he happened to be a cop.  When I saw you behind me with those lights and siren I thought it was YOU and you were trying to bring her back to me!"

wera803 cheers,

How do I separate the white part P/N 44808-MR7-013 from the rest of the assembly?

Just pull straight off and push the new one on. Don't push on too far though or it won't engage with the bolt head.

Hmmmm

I tried to pull it off, it did not want to cooperate?

All right, let's keep things on topic here, no need to go "postal"!

The white plastic nut should indeed pull right off the speed pickup. The metal attachment is a flat blade, like a flathead screwdriver, and there is no catch or retainer. It simply slides on and should not be real tight. Try wiggling it.

Wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle-yeah!

Finally pried it off with the help of some bolt seizure fluid and a flat blade screwdriver.

Now waiting for the white plastic piece from Ron Ayers to arrive.

Long ago, when sailing ships ruled the waves, a captain and his crew were in danger of being boarded by a pirate ship. As the crew became frantic, the captain bellowed to his First Mate, “Bring me my red shirt!”

The First Mate quickly retrieved the captain's red shirt, which the captain put on and led the crew to battle the pirate boarding party. Weary from the battles, the men sat around on deck that night recounting the day's occurrences when an ensign looked to the Captain and asked, “Sir, why did you call for your red shirt before the battle?” The Captain, giving the ensign a look that only a captain can give, exhorted, “If I am wounded in battle, the red shirt does not show the wound and thus, you men will continue to fight unafraid.”

The men sat in silence marveling at the courage of such a man. As dawn came the next morning, the lookout screamed that there were pirate ships, 10 of them, all with boarding parties on their way. The men became silent and looked to the Captain, their leader, for his usual command. The Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, “Bring me my brown pants!”

That fluttering of the tach and speedo was the first sign of my regulator/rectifier going south. I changed the little plastic white bit and thought I'd fixed things. Make sure to check the voltage at the battery and regulator.

The white plastic nut on viffergyrl's 5th gen wore out on the edge. I ran a bead of black RTV around it, and stuck it back on. It's been fine since.

Blond chic is speeding down the highway, and gets pulled over by a blond cop.

Cop: "Can I see your license?"
Blond digs through her purse frantically. "What does it look like?"
Cop: "It's rectangular, and has your picture on it."
Blond digs through her purse some more, and pulls out a mirror. Stares at it for a second, and hands it to the cop.
Cop looks at it for a second, hands it back, and says: "It's OK you can go. I didn't realize you were a cop."

My speedo went wonkey and youall directed me to this same fix.  I didnt fix it.  At Tmac, I noticed it went from wonky to not moving at all.

Then later at Tmac, my FI light kept coming on.  I tried my best to ignore it.  When I finally checked the FI light with the jumper wire trick, it gave me 11 flashes.  A quick check of the manual, and you guessed it "Faulty Speed Sensor"

I am going to wait on this fix until I buy a new chain and sprockets, so I am in there just once.

You don't have to pull the whole cover off to get to it, just the two 8 mm headed bolts holding the speed sensor to the cover. Then pull the speed sensor, pop the plastic piece on and put it back together. 5 minutes tops.
