I am installing LED signals to the front of my 5th gen. The stock flasher relay makes the duration faster. I get why... I kind I like it better at this accelerated rate. I feel it may get more attention. Just seems to send a more urgent message to me.
Is there any reason this is bad for the relay or the electrical system?
Won't hurt a thing, but motorists are "programmed" to look for the slower flash rate. I put one on my bike specifically made for LEDs, and the blink rate is correct now. Not plug and play, I had to cut the OEM connector off and use spade connectors.
LED kits are supposed to include an inline resistor to correct the difference in resistance between the incandescent bulbs and the LED's. Look in your kit for some white rectangular ceramic jobs with wire leads on both ends...
Superbrightleds.com sells a plug and play solid state flasher. I prefer the standard flash rate over the faster rate. I think the faster rate can be harder to see because of the short 'on' duration.
One reason to add the resistor is the original reason for the quick flash: to let you know when a blinker isn't functioning properly. While the bulb likely won't burn out, if a wiring error occurs, you'll know immediately rather than during the next pre-ride check. (We all do that before every ride, right? :P)
Don't use the resistors it defeats the purpose of having the LED...they consume less power and hence generate less heat. The resistors get very hot....

Yup, for now I have the faster rate. I am changing the flasher unit as soon as I get a chance. No resistors. Thanks!
