So as some of you know I had my '03 torn apart due to an unfortunate wiring harness fire. It was bad but not the end of my bike by any means. The dealer came good and got me the replacement parts at no cost and didn't even put up a stink about me doing the work. At first they said "we will have to inspect and repair the bike" but I said no way it's apart in my garage and you aren't coming to get it.
I proceeded to put it all back together and beef up the wiring, running great. Then a friend called me and said he wanted to buy a road bike (I own a bicycle shop) for spring but hoped we could barter for some paint work on my car or something. At first I said no I just got the car custom painted last year, then I got thinking hey let's play with the bike. I love the silver but wanted to personalize the look, I love white wheels (start groaning here, AND yes I will be asking "what's the most fling resistant lube")) I love the look of silver, white and black together and I love the layout of the 2007 RWB color scheme.
I know it's going to look even better when it's done, I know colors will be much better. I also have some mods and ideas that I'm working on that will be different than the stock 2007 RWB picture we digitally modified. I will keep updating as I get closer to final assembly. I hope you enjoy the journey even if you don't love the colors. :biggrin:
So far this is the only picture I have to share, the wheels are now white with a hint of pearl, there will be more pearl on the body.
I forgot to mention, my friend the body guy saw the melt damage on my original fairing and said "easy fix" so I now have a new in box right side fairing. Not sure what to do keep it for a spare or Ebay it.....

I think the painting the swing arm and all the other parts that are that gross looking silver should be painted black. Just like the White/Black 09 model.
I'm using GMC metallic gray, VFR (06) Pearl Cosmic black, and I'm undecided on gloss or pearl white.
Gloss would be easy & cheap, cuz I can base everything in white sealer/primer, then after clear it will look glossy... if I want pearl, I have to also buy white paint and the pearls...
I am doing pearl and I was planning to do true black gloss in the stripes but the thought of the '06 black pearl never occurred to me. Also wondering if anyone has painted their chrome heat shield on the up-pipe? How do you break the chrome enough to get adhesion? I did sand it with 1000 to give it a brushed look but still thinking black header paint...

Most of the really good header paints have a good deal of adhesion promoter in them. VHT ceramic high temp paint works good. Sand until its dull then paint it with a few coats and bake it in the oven at 250 degrees for a few hours turn the oven off and let it cool over night. Should give it a nice durable finish.
I own a bicycle shop too ;) I use to do a good deal of frame painting, its a PITA.... :goofy:

I've been using Dupont Teflon Multi use dry lube. Goes on wet dries nicely and does not fling all over. Got it at Lowe's. Its in the blue can they have another one in a yellow can but its more like Lithium grease.
I also tried it on my road bike, probably the best chain lube on the bicycle I have used yet. Nice and dry no crap spraying all over.

I have used everything. The Dupont Teflon bulti lube is the best stuff in every respect.
Nice clean drivetrain Dutchy, but sprockets? You don't lube sprockets.... I do like Motorex products. I usually use ProGold - Pro Link bicycle lube on my road and trail bicycles.
I wonder who would sell that Dupont teflon dry in Canada, I'm assuming it's a general purpose lube not motorcycle specific.
I sell some Boeshield T9 lube that sounds similar, I wonder how that would work. It works great on muddy mountain bike rides, and comes in an aerosol too.

I am getting very excited to put her back together. He is letting it all dry this week then sanding and re-clearing next weekend. He wants me to wait two weeks after that to get it back together, it's going to be hard!

It doesn't take two weeks to dry in Canada :huh: It's chemically hardened.
He just wants it to cure enough that it won't be damaged in the re assembly. Just like when you get new paint you shouldn't wax it for several weeks, it's because it hasn't cured completely.

I know but curing time IS affected by temperature as well. The chemical hardening only effects the outer layer thus the curing time needed to let the paint and clear to fully dry as both are still soft. Is was just poking fun at your location. :blush:
I still haven't washed my bike as I want to be extra sure and give it plenty of time to be fully cured even though Ryan said it would be good to go by the end of last week. I plan on waiting until the end of the month (just to be sure) and then give it a nice wash followed by the tank slapper kit Sebsped pointed me towards.

So true! We had the front of my wife's car repainted (after a teenager decided that she wanted to make a right from the left lane). The day we got it back from the shop a flock of birds decided to christen the hood. I knew the clear coat was going to be soft but I new I had to get the purple colored bird crap off of it. I found the softest cloth that I could and made it soaking wet and it still made deep clear coat scratches everywhere I cleaned.
BTW- Another MTB'er and Road Rider here! And I'm all about monochrome bikes, two bikes are Ti and one is white with grey and black (yes, the S-Works is red but it's a classic)

This may sound crazy but I kinda like the masking tape color in there. Reminds me of the Hannspree bikes. I would so use that color in small doses some where on there. Looks good!

That I guess depends on the painter, any repairs need fixing etc. I think Vanion said he paid $1200US for his two tone. I am trading a new $1000 road bike for mine and he's a buddy.
Yep. A lot of factors determine the cost. Multiple paints on each fairing, paint colors (red is the most expensive paint color according to Ryan around here), etc all add up in labor costs. Best thing to do is take it to someone you trust and get a quote. It's usually worth the cost in the end. :fing02:
I always hear of people getting these great custom paint jobs and it's always 500 or at the most 1,000 dollars. I have had estimates done for my meanstreak and it was always 2500 to 3K. That was for candy orange and some ghost flames on the tank, nothing elaborate, now thats for a tank, front and rear fender and two tiny side pods/covers. I went to every shop around and thats the pricing I always see. I guess everyone must have buddies at these shops doing it for a lot less, or maybe it just cost more to paint in the Chicago area. I can't imagine what they would quote for the VFR, a lot more to paint than on the meanstreak.

Is that if you just drop the bike off? Or take them just the parts you want painted. There's going to be a pretty big difference, depending. I once had a $1900 quote on a paintjob for an M50, and was told it'd be about half that if I took the parts off and took them in alone, so the shop didn't have to do any assembly at all.
Ryan typically charges $45 an hour for labor. It too me 6.5 hours to remove & replace the fairings and tank and I was taking my time an being extra careful on the install.
That's about $300 in savings there alone. Like Sebspeed and spotthedog said, the rest was prep work (sanding, taping off, dent and ding repairs, etc). I showed up at the shop to see the progress and Ryan and his whole team were working on various parts of the fairings and such.
If you have the equipment and time you could always sand the fairings as well for even a greater cut on the costs as that takes quite a while but you will have to talk to the shop doing the painting to work out the numbers there. I had neither (those 6.5 hours were a pain to set aside that week) so I let the pros do the work and paid for it gladly. The less time the shop has to spend prepping the parts for paint the lower the price gets.
They did offer me 300 bucks off it I brought in the parts. I didn't think to offer up sanding the parts, since I don't really know what I would be doing. I would probably just make it harder for them.

From what I saw they were basically taking off the clear and scuffing up the old paint but not taking it to the plastic (they were actually avoiding that unless they were repairing a fairing scruff). I am no expert but I assume that is so the primer adheres better before putting the new paint on top. It didn't look hard so much as time consuming. I am sure if you asked some of the forum members here who do know about painting they could tell you what needs doing. :fing02:
Sorry guys, all I have so far is the wheels and mirrors. I will take some pics but I doubt they will do justice, I haven't seen paint lay down this smooth before. Honestly you guys have seen everything I have so far. Last night he wet sanded and cleared everything again, so it should be super smooth and glossy. My guy is in Moncton a little over an hour away, I'm going to pick up the plastics Saturday night. He promised me some pics by tonight, and I will definitely start posting next Monday when shes back together.
It was +8 here yesterday so I did sneak the GF's CBR600F4i out for a 75K ride :cool:
That's it, now you have seen everything I have, well except holding these pieces in my hands is much better. I can't tell you how smooth they are. I had my car custom painted last year, wet sanded buffed 4 coats of clear. This is way better, he said it just laid down awesome, no sanding or buffing!

There is no reason to strip the paint down to plastic unless you have some sort of damage. It's very easy to sand paint just takes time and paitence.
OK,she's back together! I will take some better pictures soon, when the light and conditions are a bit better. I am very happy all in all, the stripe on the tank is a bit off I know but otherwise perfect job. I am extremely particular and some may say anal but I think I will get the tank re-done at some point to make the stripe perfect.

+1 It definetely depends on painter and what you're doing. I am currently in the process of having mine painted and would cost about $1,800 - 2,500. I'm doing most of the work myself (I used to work at the body shop that is performing the work). The reason for some of the cost for me is that I'm doing a two tone, getting all of the graphics airbrushed instead of using Vinyl, and I'm using some candy paints that are a bit more expensive. FWIW I should be able to get it finished for $400-$600 :laugh: .
WOW....it simply looks amazing to me...I have to keep looking at the background to know I am not looking at a black and white pic...see the trees...see the red mazda....stunning paint job.
I also can not tell where the tank doesn't line up from the pic posted. Can anyopne photoshop Ten Kate lime green onto the rear cowl "VFR VTech" and front/side fairing "RC 46"...I would be interested in seeing that.
I am close to sending Molly to the painters...she has been beat on hard by me and the previous owner, really like the 25th anniversary paint scheme but in different colors like this.

The paint job turned out even better than I thought it would.
The rims are amazing and the front looks awesome. The headlights are accentuated and sort of evil grinning at you!
I'd say the tank stripe being slightly off is no big deal, at least not to an untrained eye.
Just a thought, how about a chain guard in the same colour as the fairing silver?

Would also like to pass something along in the "my 2� category". Looking at your shot of the left side, I noticed how nice the gold of the inner rotor & Nissin caliper stands out. When looking further back with the chain in view, I was wondering if you gave any thought to upgrading the chain to something that had some Gold accents in it, to pick up the rotor inners and calipers...? It might be something that you'd appreciate. :fing02:

Good start but none of the lines make sense, work on the front axle to tail light FLOW.
Maybe more like this? Butchered in Paint, but you can see the lines.
Fascinating ... I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
However, if those are your photos we're not actually seeing the results of their attempt to copy your design. I suppose you could email them and ask that they stop using your photos without permission. Probably not much hope of enforcing any copyright claim.
Love the paint scheme on your bike. Shame Honda doesn't look at forums such as this for ideas on how to improve the look of their bikes. Between your awesome paint scheme and some of the other members ideas of VFRD, I'm certain they could learn a thing or two. Nice Job.
Noticed in your garage is a 2002 Protege5. I had one of those a little while ago and to this day it is one of the cars I wish I had kept. Maybe not THE best car in the world, but man it was sure a fun car to own.

Hey Seb, I used Sherwin Williams ATX. This was my first foray into automotive base/clear from a gun. I used the famous Harbour Freight $15 mini touch-up and detail gun. I'd like to have a nicer gun but I can't fault this one much. It does struggle with any of the heavier metalics as it only has a 0.6mm tip. Had paint left over so I have been doing my helmet to match, final clear goes on tonight!!

That's the idea, 250 production racing is really taking off everywhere! It's the biggest class in Atlantic Canada. I know the bike has taken a bit more development and parts are limited but the VTR is a kick ass bike, I prefer it to the CBR and the Ninja.
I used to crew up there regularly a few years back but got side tracked with other stuff for a bit. Hoping to get up a couple of times this summer again though. It's a good time.
