Ok so I have another infamous charging issue thread. Please forgive me for that. A few years back my bike died and I ahd it diagnosed at a local shop. Forsyth motorsports the mechanic used to be a member here. He said it was the R/R. I purchased one put it on and went for a ride. Came home and bike was dead again. It has sat ever since due to lack of money and child being born etc etc. Well now I got a better job things going better so I got the VFR out.
I bought a new battery and rode her home. I did some basic testing of the charging circuit here are the results to the best of my memory. First I found 18 volts at battery when revved to 5k. So I have the ''Overcharging" failure which seems not as common as not charging at all.
I went throught the electrical flow chart, Voltage drop of positive side was .30 V which is slightly higher than spec of .2V the ground side was good. It says find the bad connection and start over. I moved forward into the flow chart instead.
The block connector with the yellow wires has one charred terminal the top one running paralell to the other two. Its not melted but is burnt looking. I moved further into the diagnosis and found resistance to be out of spec between all pins on the yellow wires.
If any info I have provided gives you an idea whats up please share.
My conclusion is replace the connector that is charred, replace the stator due to incorrect resistance readings between pins on yellow wires and then verify whether R/R is dead as well which I would say it is because its not regulating voltage. Please help!
I'm not an expert; but my understanding is that the R/R cannot properly rectify and regulate voltage if the stator is not supplying a 'balanced' 3-phase voltage. If you know that the resistance is out of spec on the stator, I would replace that first and remeasure your charging system output.

- Your R/R is toast.
- Check stator too. 1. Resistance -- Pull stator connector apart - check a to b, b to c, c to a. should be less than 1.0 ohms. 2. Check continuty of each pin connector to ground - each should be infinity, no continuity. 3. Check volts VA of each pin to pin connection. Should start at 15 to 20 volts VA and rise to 60 + at revs.
Chances are since you are getting 18v at revs the stator is ok, but check it anyhoo. Also go thru all connectors. If any look burnt or melted, plan to clean out good or replace.

BTW - dont ride the bike untill you have this fixed. 18v can do nasty things to the wiring harness.
I figured my R/R was toast but I had replaced the old one when it was originally diagnosed and after the first ride bike was dead again. Ill go through your pinpoint tests tomorrow and write down my readings using a good voltmeter. If wiring harness were damaged due to the 18v what would I look for in voltmeter readings or physical damage?

good afternoon all. I was just taking some measurements and need some advice please. I did the standard measurements outlined above.
13.72 battery voltage.
no continuity on all 3 pins stator side, yellow wire connector.
high resistance R/R side on 2 pins to ground. 1 pin no continuity. yellow wire connector.
.1 ohm resistance in connectors themselves.
.1 ohm resistance on ground side, battery negative to frame fround?
10 M ohm from battery positive to frame ground.
Im thinking if test is actually correct measurement location that I have very high resistance through positive side. when I measured I did with R/R connected and disconnected. it seems like measurement was same.
Other concern is the resistance on R/R side when measured between terminal and ground indicating shorted R/R I beleive. Hopefully my description makes sense and you guys can help me out. Im close to buying a R/R but with these readings Im thinking I have resistance in power side circuit somewhere which may cause another R/R failure.
I'm not an electrician by any means, but would recommend replacing the R/R with an upgraded model, even if it tests out OK. Do you have a VFRness?
On a side note, I live in Winston, too, and would be happy to go ride sometime or hand you tools while you work on the bike. Shoot me a PM if interested.

What you just said , stator is toast, although very unique. That stator may also have destroyed that new RR
007, that sounds good man when the bike is up and running I would definately go for a ride w ya.
