Exhaust

I am looking at replacing my exhaust. I do have the oem saddlebags, so I am wondering some options. I have looked them all up, got some ideas but  I am looking for photos more than anything. I would love to show that rear tire more. I think Coffman has the shortest and the cheapest, however two brothers looks good but it shows it two different ways, at an angle or up and straight out I am guessing for the hard bags. Any photos and suggestions would help. 

I have the Arrow Race-Tech. I can confirm it fits with OEM bags. It is slightly smaller and shorter than original (and weighs about half). I love the sound with the baffle removed and would purchase again in a heartbeat. Unfortunately no pics with me at work. I'll see what I can do later.

Exhausts that come to my mind that fit with 8th Gen are Akrapovic, Dam, Arrow, 2Bros (low-fit one),  Ixil, Coffman, Scorpion.. Akrapovic, probably is the best fit, since Honda recommends it a oem upgrade. Dam, Ixil, and Coffman are best in terms of look. Another aspect that I care is sound and that is something hard to judge from youtube videos.

I have a GPR exhaust.  Fits with OEM hard bags.

I do like that delkevic, for some reason I only saw some that were the skinny super long ones. But the shorty ones look great, plus can see all those lug nuts!

I don't have hard bags but I'm 99.9% sure there are other members here with Delkevic exhausts that do - it connects to the same spot as the stock exhaust so I don't think it would be a problem.  Here's a vid of what it sounds like without the baffle - note that VTEC doesn't kick in since bike's in neutral - it's crazy loud when it does.  (Edit:  I added a 2nd vid below in which you can hear the VTEC kick in while in gear.)  Needless to say, ear plugs are a must when riding!  :tongue:

Here is my new 2014 Interceptor with the very first Competition Werkes slip on exhaust !!!!!! The look is just what I was going for, something that was sportier than the big chrome oem muffler and that was short enough to show off that beautiful single sided swing arm.  

The sound that comes out at idle is a nice burble/rumble with the db killer in. I just have been on one hour + ride so far and I am trying to be nice to the engine going per Hondas break-in guidelines. BUT....I did get into the 7000+ vtech a couple of times just for the hell of it and OMG....... what a wail that comes out of it NOW!

This was the one thing whenI first got the bike I had to change but none of the current aftermarket exhaust out there looked good to me. So I called Shawn @Competion Werks and pleaded my case knowing that their stuff is awesome , fit and finish#1........ well he said ok lets do it so here it is .

That looks great Gray!  I love how short it is.  Looks like you removed the rear peg - did you have to or was that just by choice?  Also, I don't think you have a centerstand but does the exhaust come with the little pad thingy for the centerstand to rest against?    Please post sound clip when you get a chance.   I just checked their website and it's still not listed so it must be hot off the presses  :tongue:

Yes, the Delk has a spot for the center stand.  I think you made a great choice!   I agree for the price it's hard to beat and it's one of loudest ones available - at least with the baffle out.  To whet your appetite, here's a vid of what it will sound like in your helmet - I think I hit the rev limiter a few times in this vid  :tongue:

I figure if I stick to 1-2-3 it will help keep me out of trouble:  "I'm very sorry officer - no I didn't realize I was going 105 mph - I was only in 3rd gear - I'll be sure to be more careful in the future"  :tongue:

GatorGreg... I took off the rear pegs for looks and weight savings ONLY and speaking of weight savings, this is 3.5 lbs vs 10.5 lbs for that chrome OEM BEAST OF A MUFFLER!

After I get the bike /engine properly broken in I will try to put something on youtube for you guys, but if you look on youtube now there is a vid of a VFR 1200 with a Werkes exhaust... but only at idle. The DB killer makes it very Neighborhood friendly IMO. 

This exhaust reminds me of the time that I took a new stock NSX to a cars and coffee right after I got it, and as I was leaving some really old guy with a '55 Chevy says... OH nice car...  but its TOO QUIET ! and I thought he's right and went out and got a great cat back system to spice up the looks and hear that wonderful engine that Honda had put in there.  This is the same thing with the INTERCEPTOR.... a lot more fun to ride now that its looks and sounds a lot sportier. 

GatorGreg....I don't have a center stand as noted so it was not an issue for me. I do not know what you would do other than putting your own small bump stop on the center stand itself. P.S. Thanks for putting the links up to all the Ducati guys videos..... while they are great bikes I think  Honda owners sleep a lot better than the Ducati guys.IMO

Can you check next time you're with a 5G to see if it will fit.

Akrapovic.

Since taking these pics, I have discovered that the Akrapovic sticker peels of fairly easily if you prefer.

DB killer gives it an almost stock sound, fairly quiet to keep the neighbours happy. With it out, it sound just like a V4 VTEC should.

I installed an Akra and couldn’t be happier. Still can’t believe the weight difference from the oem.

i have a GPR powercross and that did NOT fit with the OEM bags; had to make my own little lowering link for the footpeg connection but after that it was great. So i guess some GPRs work and some do not

I like the carbon tank protector - looks good!  and I will re-phrase, may not have pioneered, just left enough bread crumbs for me to follow.  Looks like the Delkavic has pretty large following in the states.  Here are a couple VTEC sounds - :)

The gen 8 Interceptor is a different model, I don't  know why its not on their site yet but mine was the first/prototype one they made. I would call them if you're interested .

Not my video but based off of looks alone I am going with the Coffman. It is what the bike should have had stock as far as the looks go.
 

Surprised noone has mentioned ixil. I think it's the sexiest. Sounds yummy too. Not as muscley as a delk, but damn nice, without baffles.

I've got a question on these. I'm looking at the coffman. But I have a deluxe model with the centerstand. Do you guys run into any issues with not having the rubber  bushing the centerstand rest against when up?

If the aftermarket exhaust doesn’t come with one, they typically have you repurpose the oem one from the stock exhaust... at least that’s what I had to do with my Akra.

edit: ended up getting an Arrow for a substantial discount. I really like the Competition Werkes, but price difference was large enough to guide my decision. Who knows, maybe I’ll circle back in the close future.

This is the most KICK ASS exhaust I've seen. It's designed for the X model but here's a video of it fitted on an 8th Gen.

I'm working to make the comp werkes pipe compatible with the deluxe. I've got a pipe coming in tomorrow and should have pics to share by the end of next week (big thanks to Oscar at Indian Larry customs). I'm passing the measurements back to competition werkes so everybody who wished this thing worked with a cs has a solution.

I think personal enjoyment is probably the biggest factor, won't feel too different to a butt dyno.

Nope just sounds better than original, a bit lighter too.   There is an increase of bhp think it’s around5 bhp. Not that you would notice that in everyday riding.

Thanks for your responses.  That's pretty much what I thought, but the claimed +5hp made me wonder if you could feel it.  5hp would have been huge on my smaller cc bikes (this is my first bigger bike).  I'm assuming the shape of the power curve would also be the same then too...  The dip at 7k when just over idle throttle input is really annoying, especially while at lean.

I'm trying to make a decision between a new seat and new exhaust, and neither have an easy or ideal solution for me on this bike.... Thinking I'll look closer at the seat first.

I'd vote to have Sargent redo your seat myself.

If we can believe the dyno chart posted at Delk’s website the dip at 7k (actually closer to 6,700-6,800) is significantly smoothed out by their mini carbon exhaust (see below).  I don’t notice any dip when riding.  The Delk mini carbon exhaust also adds 2.96 hp at the wheel and cuts just over 7 pounds.  It’s a noticeable improvement IMO but YMMV.  See first page of this thread for some of my sound clip vids - it’s extremely loud without the baffle.

I’m guessing they were in 4th gear???  I’ve had mine over 130 mph / 209 kmh (I was in Mexico of course 😀 ) and I think I remember seeing a major mag review test it up to 138 or 139 mph.  I personally don’t need to go any faster than that but if I did my Camaro has a governed top speed of 155 mph (from what I’ve been told - LOL)

I was referring to the fact that the dyno chart may be bogus.

If it was 4th or 5th, it would show more HP.

I'm sure the 8G does more than 192kmh.

I ran out of puff at 245kmh on my 5G at the Eastern Creek straight.

It looks cool and sounds cool and my friends compliment me.

My butt-dyno didn't report a change though.

I changed out the front sprocket for a bit more torque, so anything over 110mph the buzziness is like straddling a hornets nest... 

@gator - that's the hard top, heard the convertible will do a bit more than 155! :)

I gotta say I love my Arrow (titanium/carbon). The sound is awesome, fit and finish is amazing. Install was a snap. Would not hesitate to recommend or buy another myself.

Competition werkes with centerstand mod complete. I'll be sending measurements to Shawn so he can work on putting these into production.

Just use a rag soaked in Kerosene, great for removing brake dust, dirt and dissolving road tar and chain lube.

It's often disguised as "Liquid Paraffin"... often sold in garden sections or hardware stores as lamp oil, wick lantern fuel or fire starter... (read the contents as they do differ)

You can also buy low odour kerosene, same cleaning power but won’t stink your garage out.

Odorless mineral spirits is what I use to clean the yuk off the wheels, works great IMO.  :fing02:

What I do know is that kerosene won't harm the o-rings in chains. (Edited according to subsequent posts in order to avoid any misleading notions regarding WD40 and o-rings).

I've never been a huge fan of Simple Green.  Very tough on finishes, doesn't cut the mess as much as I think it should, and don't much care for the smell.  But it does help get the pigeon s*** off our balcony.

WD-40 - kinda' forgot about that stuff - maybe I'll give that a try, and then use the car wash concentrate to get the leftover WD-40 off the wheel.  I just hate having anything resembling lube (not gonna start a "what is WD-40" war here) getting on or near my tire treads.

Which reminds me, mostly unrelated story, some years ago my back was out so I got our garage attendant to wash the bike for me.  He was super-proud of the job he did.  He even sprayed Armor All on my tires.  f************k...

I use it to clean my hands after working on the bike when one of my latex gloves splits.

Also great for getting rid of those sunbaked on bugs, tar spots, in fact almost everything.  Spray on and leave for 10 mins. Been using it for years.

No, no, by all means... I didn't take it as harsh. There was no emotional content or derogatory commentary, it was concise and precise, a good call. What matters is that the data recorded here is accurate. 

Interestingly enough some products or substances will remove a lot of baked on grease and grime, especially on the wheels and the chain, much better than others as there is a chemical phenomenon wherein like dissolves like, that is to say that substances of a similar nature will absorb, or assimilate, other substances of a similar nature much more easily and that's why it's so easy to clean things up on a motorcycle rim with WD-40 or kerosene or other petroleum-based products, even some furniture polishing sprays work really well because they must have a similar molecular structure and don't repel each other, but just using some water obviously gets you nowhere... So, lipids will dissolve easier in lipids and aqueous substances will merge with aqueous substances blah blah blah, some vitamins are hidrosoluble others are liposoluble.

Soap merely used to be saponified animal fat and this was good at cleaning our skin because we have sebaceous glands and the dirt and grime collects on our skin in a film of fatty grease, of our own adipose secretions... we've all heard the expression greasy skin.

So anyway I appreciate being called out actually.

Hey Rollos, IMO thats gotta be the best can yet to show of the rear wheel!!! I'm keen on this one for my '17 800f, I'm in AU so I too have the centre stand, kudos for your mod for that! I would love to hear it if you've had a chance to record yet??

HP Corse makes a nice stubby exhaust for the Crossrunner and it looks to mount to the rearsets. Are these 7th gen rossrunners the same architecture as an 8th gen VFR?

I didn't hear a mis-shift or any gears grinding don't see a problem. Sounds like you shift yours like its made of glass or chinesium its not. It is a finely made sports bike that is made to go fast and not babied. Give it the beans and have some fun.  🙂

That low rpm shifting hurt my soul.

After purchasing my VFR the hunt was on to find the right pipe. IMHO the stock VFR pipe sounds like a twin below 4000 rpm. After 4000 and all is good but quiet. I tried a Delkevic slip-on and that lasted about 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I thought the stock can sounded better. After hearing every sound clip I could find, I took a chance and picked up this CF pipe from Scorpion. The only sound clip I could find was on their web site with the bike on a dyno. They really don't claim much of a HP increase.

I really like this pipe. To my ears it sound great through the whole rev range. If you want loud this is probably not the pipe for you, but if you want something more refined. This is as good as it gets IMHO.

I tour on this bike so the pipe needed to fit with the oem hard bags. The bottom of the case touches the top of the pipe so I did have to make an adjustment to my case by removing a small spot welded part on the heat shield. I believe its just a small pad to keep the case level to the ground when it's off the bike. Everything fits perfectly now but that was almost a deal breaker.

This pipe comes with a baffle and I tried it both ways. It sounds good to me either way, If you like more volume just remove the baffle.

The fit and finish is exceptional and to me it looks like it belongs on the bike.

I have a Scorpion Stainless can on my 4th gen and it sounds great with the decibel killer out bit I will refit it when it goes for it's next MOT, just waiting for the weather to get better before it comes out of it's winter hibernation

Just got mine in.  Werkes USA. Bought mine stainless an added flat black.  Can't wait to see an hear differences.  I'll make a video an do my best to hear an see differences.

I've been seriously thinking of buying one of these for my 5G.

Very keen to hear what you think of noise and note.

I run a Staintune without baffle at the moment, and my only worry with the CW is that it might be too loud.

Well it's been raining here the last few days, but, I got a chance to put the muffler on.  OMG I love the sound.  deep sound and not to loud just on the stand.  I have to go on the road to get a good sound idea.  I'm hoping for the best.  an have yet to use the rubber stopper on the stand. I have the perfect idea a 90 degree spark plug boot an clamp Per Duccmann (Thx).  was disappointed that for the price they could have included the muffler gasket insert.  (a little bit of a pain to get off new exhaust).

Alternatively might there be a way to attach it to the leg of the stand instead of the pipe?

I did attach  to the stand Leg but I need a different rubber than spark plug boot it wants to melt an smoke 🤨. thinking of taking to weld shop and weld a small bracket for the round stopper

Update to the Werkes Exhaust WOW. high way speeds sounds like stock not loud. but at idle Beautiful Deep Clear take offs sound sweet. Love this Mod.  (I'm going to swap back to Stock and do a record before and after.  (So amazed) Its about $200 more than Coffman but love the look and sound I feel I got a good deal.

The stock stopper looks like it's made for it if you want to reuse the whole bracket

Good morning. I have bought 2016 Vfr. Before I owned 2009 vfr vtec :-). And in older bike sound on external muffers was really good. And single swing arm was exposed. But in New vfr this is so quiet and not good looking. Any suggestions what will be looking and sound good? Also important is to expose as much as possible swing arm. And fix with OEM side bags. Thanks in advance.

Personally I have the IXIL and very happy with it, it also works fine with the OEM panniers which I have, you also have the option of fitting one or two or none of the noise reducers in the pipes.

My thoughts are that you won't get a deep rumble sound like the 6th gen because of the shorter pipe length of the 8gen, especially if you looking for the shortest pipe for your 8gen to show off the wheel. It's a bit like the Pipe Organ effect, the deeper base notes are from the longer pipes.

What I was saying is that it's unlikely you'll get a deep and throaty sound from a short pipe on an 8gen as compared to the longer length pipe on a 6gen. That's not saying that the sound will be worse on an 8gen, just different, I love the sound from my IXIL on the 8gen, it's just not as deep as the sound I had on my 6gen with Delkevic pipes.

Aftermarkets for the 8gen are generally much lighter, look better and sound nicer, so why not go for an aftermarket pipe? The only time my bike will have its original pipe back on is possibly when I sell it!

Disappointed that you cannot change physics?  :unsure:

If you want a full length muffler, higher up AND be able to fit pannier, one has to get creative.... Get saw and welder

Since your new bags "hook" into the rear subframe, you probalbly need to find a way to move the holes "out".

If there is a will there will be a way....  :tongue:

There is still some performance headers remaining for the 8g which will improve things.

I would want to be sure the Center Stand worked properly. Without the rubber stopper for the Center Stand it will come up higher interfering with the chain. Have you contacted the company for advice?

Center stand doesn't work properly with this muffler. But sound of this hp corsa is crazy. I have friend and he is a guy born with muffler in hands 😉 he will make new pipe for it. But if you're bike doesn't have center stand it fit perfectly.

Sorry, just seen this post. 

The muffler in the link is for a 2011-2014 model Crossrunner, which is equivalent to the 6th Gen VFR800, not the 8th Gen VFR800F.

Perhaps that's why it doesn't accommodate the centre stand.
