Nope, I snatched that pic right from the source, www.borderlinecustomcycle.com. look under the "projects" link. It's a 1992 ZX7 with MV Agusta body, R1 tail, Duc swingarm, ohlins, aluminum tank, and nitrous... :joystick: :thumbsup:

Newly Designed Wheel for Honda VFR800 F4i in 3.5/5.5 x17

They've been reading VFRD!!!

That black bike is spectacular - can't pick the frame. but it has MV Agusta fairings with R1 tail on custom subframe...

Edit: a few posts in since I was writing mine... ZX-7R eh? Always liked them, and I'd love to build one up like that thing! Big bucks though.

I think their site is wrong. It is listed for a double swing arm, lists as fitting F4i also, and shows a wheel that uses bearings and has the sprocket mounted to it.

On their own website, they show SSSA wheels, but they appear to be single nut designs with 4 drive pins.

Might have to do a spindle conversion....

I think the additional cost is brought about by the fact the rear hub has an adapter to fit a Duc wheel with a single nut eliminating the four nuts of the VFR. I will post up a picture after I get back from Spring Mtn. race tract this weekend. I have run out of time and will miss out on using them at the track..

I have been working with Mr. Wakamatsu for about a year now trying to get this off the grount.

He first made a die for the Duck, and rather than go to that expense again he decided on the wheel adapter out of chrome molly.

Someday, hopefully, I'll get around to doing the single-nut hub mod, so I can slap on a rear mag wheel to match the Marchesini mag front I have on there now. It's incredible how much turn-in and steering effort are improved by slapping on a lighter hoop, so if I can remove even more rotating weight from the rear (combined with suspension mods), this bike will be an absolute dream to ride.

PS -- the linked picture was taken moments after I got the bike together, so please refrain from the usual poultry-related comments... :D

Just checked back in on their site and the VFR has been removed from the application chart. It would seem they were unsuccessful in creating the wheels.

If I had the room I would own a lathe & bridgeport mill, but alas I can only fit the bikes & cars I own just so no chance in hell unless a fairy god mother buys me a bigger home.

Don't be envious, it's not all peaches and cream. I've been trying to get a spacer set done for a few weeks now, but I can only use the lathe when it's not set up for a "real" job. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) I have managed to pull off a few real nice pieces in the time I've been at the job, just takes a bit of time and a few favors sometimes. Been there just over 7 years and recently got a promotion I've been wanting for about a year, which takes me(mostly) out of the manufacturing environment and into the engineering side of things. My new title is "Manufacturing Engineering Technician", and my priorities are to program a new $200,000 CNC brake press, (3) 2 axis and (2) 5 axis waterjets, and the 4 CNC mills. The nice part is, we are generally open on weekends, so I can still come out then to get my hands dirty. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fing02.gif)

A Bridgeport would be nice, and I know we have a few in storage... but I think I could make do with a Smithy(www.smithy.com). Most bike stuff would be small enough to get out of a benchtop model, and they now have industrial grade versions that are accurate enough for use in ISO certified facilities. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fing02.gif)

If you're desperate enough, you can always fall back to "the poor man's lathe". (chuck a workpiece up in a drill press, and have at it!) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Probably won't help. It's likely the design of the wheel that allows it to clear the rear brake caliper, so you would still have to use a Carrozzeria wheel designed specifically for the VFR800 unless they are using one of their wheels designed for a Ducati.

The only other rear wheel that will clear the VFR800's OEM rear caliper/rotor is Dymag's Sport Magnesium. And you still need a modified axle (no longer available through Dymag) or axle adapter or whatnot.

Alternately, you could buy a set from Carrozzeria and try returning them after you had programmed the whole thing into autoCAD...just be prepared to make the wheels too, though.

It's already been stated(possibly in another thread), that this adapter was modeled after Triumph's setup, so one might be able to bolt up a Triumph rear. I wonder if the part # for the wheel cross-references with their Triumph wheel?

In any case, not having to pay their price for the adapter would get me that much farther ahead, eh?

I still have our discussion of the conversion saved, and while I would still like to keep the linked brakes, I would give them up to get the wheel I want. The 3 spoke rears are my least favorite, the PVM 10Y's are my #1, with the new Duc 1098 wheel a close second. Any CBR600F4 wheel with similar design can fill in the front.

I'd love to try and mill my own wheels! Trouble is getting that huge block of aluminum to start with! :goofy:

ps - I have a spare 5th gen axle I'm saving to try and make the conversion with at some point, just don't know when I'll get time for it.

Have you ever looked at a Triumph final drive up close ? It is almost a carbon copy of the Honda's, except for brake linkage. I bet the whole thing would slide right into a '98+ VFR800 swingarm all nice like. Have to compare the two side-to-side or take some measurements but... :rolleyes:

They (Carrozeria) unfortunately do not have a great reputation amongst the sportbike community. Their initial output sportbike wheels had several problems, such as difficulty in mounting/demounting of tires, and as I've personally experienced, shoddy anodising on a set of gold Z1000 wheels (they ended up being returned to the retailer that sold it).

I do hope they've pulled their act together though. They should have, by now.

I have had these wheels on a ZRX1200 and they were fantastic! Awesome finish, customer service was good and tire mounting was easy, beeads popped on with 45 psi. The only issues: The valve stems they sent suck. I knew this and ordered Triumph 90 deg stems.

There initial run of V6 model wheels had some issues. They also had some issues with the powdercoating company they were working with. All of these problems were resolved long ago, and the vstar wheels have had zero issues. I've sold a bunch of them and have not had any complaints. I've also not read or heard of anyone complaining online about carrozzeria with any of the current model wheels. The v6's were discontinued.

Does anyone know the cost on these wheels now? And does anyone actually have these on their VFR? I would like to buy a set but iI would like someone's feedback on these wheels. I think I found a site that has them for 1689 but not sure if thats for both.

C'mon Sebastian. Just find a damaged 6.0" Ducati wheel and measure the offset. Buy a Ducati spindle off eBay for the measurements there, and combine the two to make the spindle adapter. I estimate the offset spacing on Carrozeirra's adapter to clear the VFR's rear caliper and centre the wider Ducati wheel to be about 6.35 mm. Turn one out of something cheap like plastic or wood to test fit and you're off :fing02:

It's sort of been done already. Matt did it on one of his 4th gens using triumph guts and a monster wheel.

I looked into these 2 years ago. Expensive and custom work due to rear drive yes, but not available for 6th Gen models with ABS. That ended that.
From other comments during my research, they did reduce the overall weight up front, but the rear came out almost the same with the weight of the custom SSS assembly.
Handling did improve due to reduction in spinning mass, but in the end he didn't think it worth the $2500 USD cost for results other than, MAN THEY LOOK GOOO!

Couple things to consider:

A fella on Hawk GTForum has a set of Corazzerais mounted on his Hawk using modified stock spindle , I know that Hawk spindle is direct swap for VFR since most Hawkers use Vifer wheels and spindles on their bikes. Also he paid closer to $1000 than $2K, can't remember exact figure but I can ask

Also same fella making me a spacer to fit a Ducati complete eccentric, brakes and wheel on to Hawk swingarm, it's a simple sleeve with small offset, he provided drawings but I opted to have him make it for a reasonable fee. Should work on VFR since the swingarms have same offset and eccentrics have same diameter.

I'd post some links but the Hawk Forum is down for maintenance

So the Ducati monster/848/1098/1198 eccentric will fit in the VFR swingarm? I didn't think it would work at all.

I'm using 748/916/996 eccentric with custom made sleeve, once I have it in my hands will post up some pics, but basically it's a simple sleeve that allows smaller Duc eccentric to fit in larger opening of Honda swinger, it also provides proper offset.

Ding Ding Ding :cheerleader: We have a winner !

So many people confuse what people have done with (mostly) 4th gen VFR750's with what's possible on the 5th and 6th gen VFR800. You can sleeve a Ducati eccentric for the 800 as well, but you are still going to have to deal with the 3-piston rear caliper.

Looks like I will be doing a spindle for another board member with a 5th gen this spring. They are going to fab their own brake caliper stay for use with a Ducati caliper, so those of you not afraid to delink your brakes may soon have a reasonable method of putting aftermarket wheels on your VFR800.

The Carrozeirra 'kit' would allow you to retain your ABS brakes as the spindle adapter offsets the wheel enough to clear the VFR800's 3-piston rear brake caliper, which is why they use a 6.0" wide wheel instead of a 5.5"

Really ? The VFR wheel is a common mod for the Hawk GT, but it is typically done by modifying the Hawk spindle to accomodate the VFR wheel:

At one point, Carrozeirra would sell you an adapter for $800. But I think they figured out pretty fast that would have allowed someone to copy it PDQ.

Not that you couldn't make a copy if you bought the whole kit, but the kit price is a bigger deterrent for someone that might otherwise have access to a programmable CNC machine.

Not that you couldn't just figure it out by looking at the pictures and taking some of your own measurements, mind you :cool:

Well, the 848 eccentric is different from the 1098/1198 ecentric, or at least the spindle is because you can use 848 wheels on the older 748/916/995/998 bikes, but not 1098/1198 wheels.

There have been two other (supposed) people to my knowledge that have put either an RC30 or Ducati eccentric in their VFR. Have never seen actual pictures of a finished product anywhere. Two of the others out there (Swiffer, DouglasTheCook) on this site I had made here in Edmonton. BusyLittleShop did at least one conversion on a blue (and vomit-colored) VFR750 (not sure how else to describe the paint scheme...) that is now owned by a vfrD member. And MrMatt worked with SA1713 on the Triumph eccentric conversion for the 4th gen after I spent some time discussing it with him. At the time we were looking at fitting it to the 5th gen, but it would have required a cylindrical spacer and there may have been some other issues that I can't recall but it was quite do-able for the 4th gen (and most likely the 3rd gen since it's final drive doesn't differ that much from the 4th's design, if at all).

VFROEM also put an NC30 final drive in his VFR750 which was fairly well documented on this site, but everything else is vaporware without pics.

As for VFR wheel mod there is more than one way of doing it, you can use Hawk spindle and modify it or just install VFR axle. Also hawk spindle could be modified to accept Ducati wheel, not likely to be done with VFR but I suppose you can pic up Hawk (or NC30) spindle and use it on earlier model VFR's

Pretty much how you would fit it into a 3rd or 4th gen swingarm with the brake stay mount on the top of the swingarm. You can see the cylindrical spacer between the Ducati eccentric and the VFR750 swingarm.

VFR800 has a different linkage which I found more complicated to deal with due to it's location on the inside of the swingarm.

Looking at the pics it seems like Duc brake carrier attached to swingarm in the same place as VFR800, there is a bolt the does through the slot on the carrier that allows it to slide back and forward as eccentric is rotated.

I can post a Duc SSA pics tomorrow, all my parts are at the shop.

Well, Yes and No.

The Ducati brake stay is meant to slide on a fixed pin that is part of the Ducati's swingarm casting. I thought it would put some torsional stress on the linkage, but if I could have found someone to cut me a proper brake stay based on the Ducati part it would have been easy to make the sliding slotted portion longer such that it would have fit right along where the VFR800's brake linkage bolts to the swingarm.

I would have had to make a few other changes to rotate the caliper to the bottom position of the wheel where it should be, as well as offset it to work with the VFR's rear disc, but if I knew someone who could have done that, putting a Ducati wheel on a VFR800 using a Ducati caliper would have been a snap.

As it was, I could have fabricated a short linkage like in your first pic, but didn't want to rotate the rear caliper ahead of the centerline of the rear wheel, so I stuck with the longer linkage and modified the OEM Ducati brake stay and a Ducati rear rotor to work with the VFR.

Maybe there was a better way to do it, but it's not like there was anyone around to ask so I did as much as I could figure out from the information I could gather, and just reasoned out the parts that were still blank.

Ask Jamon over at http://www.blackrhubarb.com/ what the dealio is with Ducati and RC30 wheel interchangeability. The selection of OEM Ducati wheels is much better, unless you already have an RC30 wheel.

The RC30 did not have a cush drive, so yes it will probably be too short on the sprocket side to work with your VFR750 cush drive.

I think the main "gotcha" on the Carrrozzeria wheels is that they are 6" width. A lot of us viffer nuts are conscience of handling and dont want to do anything that would affect it negatively which a 6'" wheel would. The best way to go as Safe-T has pointed out to go single nut and keep stockish handling is to look at Ducati wheels and brakes.

No cush, direct drive is a much better responsive feel....The loss of rotating weight is very noticeable when under power! On the track the acceleration over other bikes puts most others to shame.... bring on the mods, you wont be disappointed...

I guess i could have left the brake unit on the top of swingarm, but went underneath because i could...Had a brake stay welded onto bottom of swing arm, so it works similar to the ducati brake stay...I have seen BLS make up something also similar in his HRC swing arm, but his is proper posh...

this is exactly what i want to do.

i have several 17 RC30 wheels and i am trying to simplify the VFR wheel swap considring i already have a lot of what is needed. I do NOT have a RC30 sprocket carrier or sprocoet nut and did not want to but any if i was unsure it would work on the 98 VFR arm. I have installed it and it looked short but you have cleared that up, thanks.

So, you are using the RC30 spindle and sprocket carrier in the RC30 eccentric in your VFR750 ? Neat. The VFR750 eccentric is smaller than the VFR800's (and the same size as the Triumph's ~ see MrMatt).

Rumor is the RC45 stuff fits in the VFR800 arm, but no one seems interested in ferreting out used RC45 parts to try it out around here yet.

yes the vfr750 eccentric parts are similar size to the rc30, then after the 750 was the 800, i believe the rc45 is the next best match to the 800 sizes...The measurements are all out there on the net. I thought i saved them on my lap top, but again they have become elusive. I have posted them on VFRD twice already so have a look if you get the time..

Not a lot of rc45 spares going around to my knowledge.....

I'd scour the HawkGT forums - I bet they are pretty close, though. But you can't use a Duc wheel on the Hawk spindle without relocating the drive pins. You might be able to use an NC35 rear wheel, but again I think the drive pin circle is different.

The RC30 sprocket carrier is the same as the NC30 and NC35, so used ones should be available on UK eBay (though they are usually attached to swing arms!) Have a look at vfroem's threads/gallery. He's got an RC30 spindle mounted in a VFR750 swing arm (and NC30 sprocket carrier) IIRC.

$350 plus 5% GST, plus shipping back and forth. You need to supply a set of RC54 drive pins and bolts as these need to be press-fit, along with an OEM 46mm Ducati three-peice wheel nut because I want to make sure everything fits.

Once you get it back, you will need to fabricate your own rear brake caliper stay using a brake caliper of your choosing, since we are still working on that. If I were you I would wait, unless you want to do your own experimentation. The VFR800's stock rear brake caliper and stay will not work.

I have one other member on the board who is interested and who I have agreed to do a spindle conversion for at cost ($350 plus 5% GST), for which I hope to gain some information myself. If it were a bolt-on conversion right now - including a substitute rear brake caliper and stay, RC45 drive pins and Ducati wheel nut - you would be looking at around $1000.

ScotCarr's are great wheels. Too bad they bounced on making them for the VFR.

They never made a set for the VFR. They just used an F4 front wheel and a wider 6.0" Ducati rear wheel coupled with an adapter to offset it to clear the VFR's rear caliper and still be centred on the swingarm.

I don't think the caliper clearance is an issue, only reason to space the wheel out is to keep it aligned with bikes center line.

Here's something to consider, NONE here mentioned or tried the HawkGT mounting method because NONE have probably ever removed the wheel from the Hawk. Well, here's food for thought, Hawk wheel is held in place by a bolt that passes through a center of the axle, than a nut holds the wheel in place via spacer. How difficult would it be to drill and spline the hole through the center of VFR axle and use a large bolt/spacer and nut to mount it HawkGT style?

in the back is a 748 lower triple modded with CBR900RR stem to fit the Hawk

left front is the sleeve insert, on the right is Duc eccentric with 5mm ring pressed on it for an offset

I'm using Duc cush, the upside is that there are many lightweight aftermarket parts available for Ducati set up, downside is that Duc's have always used very small sprockets, 38 rear is stock, had heluva time locating a 43t rear, also have to use aftermarket cush for that, Ducati cush-drive consists of rubber insulators inserted on to a sprocket, dealer does not carry sprockets bigger than 39t (IIRC?) so I'm using the Fast By Ferracci carrier, got a sprocket from them as well, must have been for a stunt bike.
