My "track Use" Vfr

This is the first photo of my work on a 1998 5th gen VFR to use on track.

I've bought crashed with fork bent and here there's the description of the substitutions:

  • Forks from a 1989 Suzuki GSXR (with preload, compression and rebound settings).
  • Front wheel from a Bimota YB9, with adapters for the stock VFR brake rotors
  • Front brake caliper from a Yamaha FZR 1000, with adapters for the Suzuki forks.
  • Handlebars from Kawasaki ZX-10R, with adapters for the Suzuki forks.
  • Footpegs from an old CBR 600, with adapters working on stock fixing points.
  • Steel exhaust can designed by me.
  • Rear steel subframe built on my measure.
  • Rear Ohlins shock with custom setup for my weight (95 kg) lenghtned 5 mm than stock shock
  • Alloy fuel tank (to finish) with fuel pump from F4 CBR 600.

The center stand will be obviously removed.

More to come all the fiberglass components (fairing, tank cover, tail, front and rear fenders, ecc.)

Sweet project! Something I've wanted to do myself, but lack the fabricating skills for it. Since you look to have raised the foot pegs those should be fine, but these bikes have a habit of dragging the headers. Maybe your properly sorted suspension will cure that?

First, i will thank you all for your appreciations. I know that this bike is not the ultimate in track performance but the i was fascinated by this unusual project.

Looks awesome so far! Can't wait to see the finished product. Can you post more pics in your gallery? What weight target are you shooting for? What is the foil looking material below the fuel tank? Is that heat shielding material?

  • In gallery i've posted the sigle parts of the exhaust can, have you saw it?
  • Actually i've not a target weight. For the moment i think to make the modification to run the bike.
  • The foil under the tank is just a cotton cover to keep the engine protect from dirt.

  • Browsing the site i saw many front end modification with RC51 forks that i assume it 's perfect for VFR, but here in Italy such fork are hard to find and very expensive.
  • I bought the Suzuki fork mounted many years ago for few euros and so, when i've bought the bike... I was lucky with the measures too. The offset value of the fork is the same and so the trail of the bike remain unchanged.
  • No, i'm not a welder. The stock tank was OK. The alloy fuel tank is just to try to make something different.

  • I've designed the foot pegs adapters to have the position of the feet around at same the stock position.
  • For the bike behavior once finished keep i can say nothing of sure. I just can say that i try to have a driving position charging the front end a little bit more than the stock but i don't want exaggerate. For the rest once on track i think to spend much time finding the right set-up

Here's how it could look... I agree that the seat is fairly high, but track-only bikes tend to be that way to help weight the front wheel. I'm sure Luigi has it covered - this thing is fantastic Luigi, thanks for sharing! Looking forward to seeing how it comes along.

The exhaust is effecitvely a lit bit too high, but i was constrained by the pre-formed dimensions of the bends.
Anyway the seat would be immediately behind the fuel tank and i assure you that i'would be happy to move it forward some more, but here i have the constraints of the tank dimensions.

If someone think that this can be expensive for someone living on the other side of the Ocean, i tell you that i bought a pair of OEM front rotor for the road use VFR and i payed, with price list, custom taxes and expedition almost 70 euros (around 95 dollars) less than the best Honda Italian dealer.

This is the situation at the moment.
Instead the alluminium tank of the first photo i've installed a tank of an old 1987 CBR 600 (in US called Hurricane).

Swingarm
The rear train are waiting for a 520 transmission, a chain cover to protect the brake line and a mudguard for the wheel...

This is a modification, very simple to do, to be free to mount any kind of footstep needed. It works in the same way and on the same stock working point without any permanent modification. Now i've mounted the step of the same CBR 600 of the tank, but i can fit any other i need. With the lever mounted in the way you wil see the first gear will be engaged pulling up and the other gears pushing down the lever.

I don't think you are going to have much success with the components you are using on the front end. If you are going to trust your life to some old junk parts, just don't push it to hard when you get on track because it doesn't look like they will work very well. The rest of what you are doing looks good though, good luck.

Doesn't look like junk to me, and not everyone can afford the latest and greatest parts. Luigi seems to know what he's doing.

I like the footpeg replacement parts, very ingenious! Nice work on the tank mods too, this will be a project worth following :rolleyes:

I got the impression that at the moment everything is in the "pre-production" fitment and fiddling stage. No doubt will be looking the business at the end.
I like the rearset relocation plates. Might get a couple interested buyers if you wanted to sell a fully developed kit! Or maybe just some copycats http://www.vfrdiscus...tyle_emoticons/default/+1.gif (Taking mental notes for my "dream" 5th Gen project!)

Sorry about the crash Luigi, hopefully not too bad for you.

As for the project, looks interesting.
I have to wonder why not use a front end from 1 bike instead of mixing parts from 4 bikes?
But, if you can make it work right, more power to ya. :fing02:


Simply because i've had this parts free to use...
Anyway if this parts will show limits of performance i will change with something of better in future.

Sometimes mixing parts works really well - I have USD forks made up from Kawasaki uppers and Yamaha lowers, and the overall length is substantially more than if I had just R1 or ZX-10R forks - meaning a much better match to OEM rake/trail figures. Not planned that way, it's just how it came together.

Excuse me for the great delay to answer you but i read just today your question.

I've used the 1987 CBR600F footpegs. It seems to me that in USA that model was called "Hurricane".
Anyway is the 1st gen of CBR600 family.

I am at 97/98% of rehab. Now i have the right hand knee that have some problem that don't permit me to push hard with excercises. Work on "Track use VFR" are in progress anyway. :fing02:

Hi to all.

The project are in progress again. In last months have made much work (family, job and others duties permitting) so now, after a short functional test i have disassembled all to make a deep cleaning everywhere and now i'm reassembly the bike.

The rear subframe that have required much time to be created since that any single accessory location (relays, ECU, battery...) have required a provisional fixing, and a jump to the welder (i have not the TIG).
Sincerely after all this work...dont like me so much. The square tube are easy to put together but i have in mind a "round tube" version that i think will have a better look.
I' m instead satisfied by the accessory location. I have installed all the equipments mounted on the stock subframe and i have added:
  • a little tank collected to the cranckcase breather tube that on the stock VFR goes to the air-box.
  • a simple case for the Power Commander unit
  • the support for the shock reservoir

Harness will be modified to remove correctly, without a terminal rough cut, any unused wire (lights, turn signal...) and next "good look" positioned.

The ECU support are crafted from a an alluminium sheet. Between the device and the support are inserted a rubber strip for vibrations reduction. The simple fixing are obtained from an o-Ring and little hook.

Two pics that shows the rectifier and the crank breather tank, located in the rear of the subframe. The rectifier position are thought to work in open air to avoid overheating. The same two RR fixing bolts are used on opposite side to fix the support for the fuel pump relay and the barometric sensor.

Sprocket cover are partially cut to have a little "race look" mantaining the protection. I have again the speed sensor mounting holes for the moment. Gear lever works upside, with the first gear above and the others below. Gear linkage fixing bolt are provisional

- complete 2009 Suzuki 750 GSXR front end with upside down forks, radial brake calipers and radial master cylinder.

- 2000 CBR 600 F4 front wheel with 1999 CBR 1100XX brake discs (310mm diameter)

- 1993 CBR 900 rear swingarm (much lighter than VFR stock) with 2000 CBR 600 F4 rear wheel.

- an engine modification that i talk you about later (when i'll be sure that is possible)

How much does the 900RR swingarm weigh?

Triumph Speed Triple swingarms weighs a portly 37 lbs. Good thing it won't fit on the VFR.

Hello.

I not weightned swingarm yet since i'm late with work and i prefer finish the bike for the season, so i can't answer you

Keep in count that with this mod i can eliminate the heavy steel rear axle that alone weight not less than 700/800 grams (1.5 / 1.7 lbs, if i correctly converted) and all other swingarm parts.

More don't forget that the VFR swingarm are almost completely made with cast fusion with thick walls, consistently heaviest than the CBR, made in alloy sheet and profiles welded. Handling it i can feel a great difference but at this moment i can't tell you a number. When i did the mod i'll post all weights for sure.

Weight reduction is not the only goal. I'll have a consistently wheelbase reduction wheter CBR swingarm is shorter, than to install it i 'll made a C-style cut in the pivot spindle passage to adapt it to the VFR cranckcase.

Maybe this can be a source of handling problems, 'cause this means a whole bike weight balancing upsettings, but i'll work to solve it.

Like you understand, this bike will never ends (i live near Milano and here a work of this kind can be designated like "it will never end like Milano Dome"), but i have great fun anyway...

Pretty substantial difference then! Wheel would be far lighter too. RV4 put one on his ultralight VFR.

16 lbs, hence little bit more than 7 kg.

Hi to all.

I know, it's an old never ending story about this project but, since i never lost the hope to finish it, i restart the work to have a 5th gen VFR to use for track days.

So i would like to show you the latest modifications on the exhaust system, the front fork and the cooling system.

As you can see i've installed the two complete fork legs coming from a 2008 Suzuki GSX-R 600 (i know that in US there's many VFR that uses the VTR SP fork, but in Italy this kind of suspension are not so easy to find used and the price are anyway expensive.) The clamp are designed by me and are manufactured on CNC. The clamp offset are reduced to 30 mm from the stock measure that is 37mm.

This is the exhaust system routing. The pipes are finished but the compensation chamber are still incomplete. Below, on the right, the main cooler, made by the union of the two stock elements and mounted in front position to have more cooling effect. Above, always on right the additional cooler, made by the union of two scooter Honda coolers.

As you can see, this cooling system solution shows a problem, the main cooler low edges surely go to scratch at the first lean angle, so i studied another solution that show you later.

I've choosed to remove the oil cooler, instead i've installed the intercooler used on the CBR 900 (i don't remember the year, it seems the 93 but i can fail) To have more cooling effect, since the water have the additional charge to cool down the oil too, i tought to mount a supplementary water cooler in the same place where the oil cooler was placed.

This is a schematic compensation chamber description. This i the solution that i found to have all four pipes with same lenght and have one junction point. I respected the stock pipe leght (around 670 mm). The view point of this drawing is the "front wheel" point of view seeing to rear of the bike.

This is the main cooler, obtained by the union from the two stock coolers, here are just positioned...

..and here the final result once completed. This in theory why, as you seen this cooler is too height, so i tought an alternative solution that is

...this. This is just an example, created with Photoshop. The final cooler anyway will be very similar. Conceptually i will use one stock cooler and one that is again the Honda scooter part, united with alluminium sheet formed. Once created and mounted i will post pictures.

This is the sequence followed to obtain the supplementary water cooler. Two scooter Honda coolers with removed all fixing points, hose joints and the two central "shoulders".

The final step. Red line shows the welding to unite it. After, in the low side, cooler was be holed to apply the joints for the hoses to connect it to main cooler.

i have used the top radiator from a suzuki TL1000R with an oil cooler from a honda SP1. It worked very well.

I had to move the inlet on the radiator from Left side to right side, but very easy.

As it was a "made in China" copy, it started leaking after a year - it also looked a bit wide on my streetfighter with no bodywork.

I have a custom made narrower radiator to mount, that has a 42mm core instead of standard 16mm core.

Yes, the water leakage is the great doubt abou this work, but i'm confident in the welders experience.

I have no idea about dimension and shape of the TL1000R, but could be interesting some pics!

Now i've gave a fast sight to your thread, but i will keep for me some time to read it with more attention.

Honestly, i never tought to the Suzuki TL / SV radiator for my mod. I always keep the OEM radiators the starting point for the work, but i i see that many other coolers works great. My first goal is have cooling power enough to control the engine heat and the oil temperature in that hard situation that is the thr track use, where VFR often shows his limit with cooling.

The TL rad worked so well I was thinking about ditching the oil cooler. It always ran around 85-90 Celsius.
I had one fan on it and wired up. At 80kph and faster, the fan would spin by itself since it got so much air flowing through the rad. All I needed to do was swap input from left side to right side,no other mods to the rad.

Since I bought a cheap ($110aus) china rad it sprung a random leak. I have a custom made one ready to go on, much narrower (350mm wide) but 42mm thick, no fan. The TL rad looked really wide without a fairing, but on a track bike it'll be under the fairing anyway. i dont think its any wider than the original side mount rads.

Purtroppo proprio il radiatore inferiore mi sta dando un pò di lavoro.

Infatti con la larghezza che aveva nelle foto che vedi e per la sua posizione, era certo che alla prima piega toccasse terra, perciò lo sto modificando nella parte bassa rimuovendo uno dei due elementi originali che lo componevano, applicandone uno più stretto. Ora tutto il blocco non sporge più.

Una volta eliminati due piccoli trafilaggi dovuti alle numerose saldature (d'altronde sapevo di questo rischio) posterò la nuova conformazione.

che obiettivo ti sei posto? riduzione del peso? maneggevolezza? hai raddoppiato la superficie radiante, significa che intervieni anche sul motore?
Sulla mia ho messo l'avantreno completo di una ducati st3 e collettori con scarico a sinistra. Anche io ho dovuto riadattare il telaietto reggisella ma modificando quello di un cbr900RR. Partendo dal 750 mio obiettivo è quello di fare una replica di una rc45 quindi sto curando molto il lato estetico e le proporzioni. Per le prestazioni poi vediamo .... ;-)

Io ho iniziato questo progetto molto tempo fà con l'unico obbiettivo di realizzare una versione quanto più possibile adatta alla pista.

Di consguenza peso e manoggevolezza sono entrambi due fattori che fanno parte delle realizzazione di questo progetto.

Non ho dei valori di riferimento, anche perchè il trasformare una VFR 800 del 98 in una racer comporta già un notevole lavoro anche solo per avvicinare questo punto di arrivo. Dei numeri si potrà parlare solo in seguito.

La superficie radiante è stata aumentata a prescindere dagli eventuali interventi previsti sul motore (che comunque avrei in programma).

L'aumento della superficie è stato anche un "obbligo" per il fatto che, spostando i radiatori frontalmente, lo spazio a disposizione mi ha costretto a sfruttare ogni centimetro disponibile. Considera poi che ho rimosso il radiatore dell'olio sostituendolo con uno scambiatore di calore di un CBR, quindi un certo aumento dell'efficienza del sistema di refrigerazione era necessaria. Inoltre dalle voci raccolte nei vari forum, l'aumento delle temperature del VFR usato in pista è un fatto diffuso, quindi ho pensato di dare una bella "ripensatina" al tutto.

Tieni presente che il VFR che ho usato come base è un mezzo che ho acquistato incidentato e radiato, quindi non è assolutamente previsto un suo uso in strada.

Se hai già qualche foto del tuo progetto pubblicale, sono sempre interessato a vedere progetti di personalizzazione, anche solo di estetica.
